Why we work in microwave electronics?
Microwaves or high-frequency waves find application in several areas ranging from defence and strategic spheres to those in commercial ones. Although developments in microwave devices have been reported from as back as the 1850s, the quest to improve their performance characteristics in terms of their operating frequency, power and bandwidth still continues. These efforts have made it possible to operate devices up to the THz range, achieve powers in excess of 20 GWs and bandwidths of several decades independently across various applications. Such advancements have made technologies such as 5G, wireless charging, satellite communication, electronic warfare, fusion, accelerators, a reality.
Self-sufficiency in these high technology areas is the key to the continued prosperity of a nation. LAMBDA, along with its research and industry partners, seeks to contribute to this cause by exploring novel and innovative techniques to further the boundaries of microwave, pulse power and allied technologies in the country. LAMBDA is a research lab working in the areas of antennas, microwave engineering and electron beam devices. Recently, it has also started exploring pulsed power and plasma technology applications.
Our vision is to identify, understand and develop technologies in selected thrust areas in the field of microwave/mm-wave engineering for societal, industrial and strategic applications and contribute to indigenous development and production efforts. We host a variety of simulation and experimental facilities including an upcoming high power microwave test facility. Our research mission is integrated with our efforts to train and empower the new generation of engineering in the science and art of microwave engineering.
